This UNEP FI policy brief discusses the evolution of the sustainable finance policy and regulatory landscape in China. It is intended as a short and accessible primer for financial sector stakeholders, policymakers and others with interests in China’s green finance policies—highlighting the key sustainability-oriented regulation and instruments that China has deployed over the past two decades.
The brief covers three main dimensions of China’s green finance ecosystem: national ambition and context, enabling environment, and prudential and monetary tools. It references nearly 50 measures that have shaped the country’s sustainable finance agenda and explores how these instruments and related tools are being deployed to guide the transition toward a more sustainable economy.
