Caisse des Dépôts is a state-owned financial institution that performs public-interest missions on behalf of France’s central, regional and local governments. Today, Caisse des Dépôts is the leading administrator of French savings deposits and retirement savings funds and of private funds that are protected under French law. As well as the leader in financing low-income housing in France and urban development. We are also the long-term partner of local and regional governments as an investor in local development projects, as well as through subsidiaries that provide regional development services (Transdev, Egis, Compagnie des Alpes and VVF Vacances), or are involved in real estate (Icade and Société Nationale Immobilière) and private equity investing (CDC Entreprises).
Caisse des Dépôts is present throughout France thanks to its regional offices, which work directly with local and regional governments, making the full range of Caisse des Dépôts’s expertise and financing know-how available to them. Caisse des Dépôts is also a leading long-term institutional investor. Caisse des Dépôts is the leading shareholder in CNP (personal insurance) and in July 2004 became the strategic shareholder in Caisse Nationale des Caisses d’Épargne (CNCE).
It also manages substantial portfolios of shares in listed companies, private equity investments and real estate assets.

For Caisse des Dépôts, as for any other large company or institution, contributing to sustainable development involves seeking performance on three registers: economic, social and environmental. Performance in each domain is measured by its direct impact on society. As a major financial institution serving France, Caisse des Dépôts has an impact on local and regional development, on company development and job creation as well as on inter-generational, societal and economic solidarity. As a major institutional investor, Caisse des Dépôts focuses on generating a long-term return on its investments, an essential condition for sustainable development. Caisse des Dépôts pioneers in carbon finance through innovative financial tools allowing a positive business response to reduce carbon emissions. Its engineering and service subsidiaries in the transportation, real estate, infrastructure and tourism sectors are directly involved in societal and environmental challenges.
To help meet these challenges, Caisse des Dépôts has created a Sustainability Department to coordinate and promote these activities and has adopted a three-fold approach: social and environmental responsibility, socially responsible investing, fighting global warming.
Caisse des Dépôts is actively involved in the UNEP FI programme. It is a key sponsor to the Principles for Responsible Investment Project. The aim of the project is to develop and promote a set of principles that defines what constitutes responsible investment and that is endorsed by both the UN and leading institutional investors worldwide. Caisse des Dépôts joined UNEP FI in 2004. It has been involved in various UNEP FI activities since 2003.
